This photo was taken in 2005 at the Heirinji in Saitama, Japan. Burton Watson is the master translator of Chinese and Japanese poetry. Like many others of his age (born 1925), Burton's first contact to Asia was during and after World War II. He served in the US Navy and landed at Yokosuka, Japan in 1945. Subsequently he returned to the USA and studied and taught at Columbia University. Presently Burton lives and works in Tokyo, Japan. He edited The Columbia Book of Chinese Poetry, and has many translations to his name, including Zhuangzi, Bai Juyi and the Lotus Sutra. He now lives and continues to translate in Tokyo. Just recently he has been the recipient of the American Academy of Arts and Letters Literature Award for his translations of Japanese and Chinese literature.
