Mountain Songs, 山之歌 Shānzhigē, is a bilingual, database website, fully searchable, which connects ancient (and some modern) Chinese poetry to the sites where the poems were written by means of digital images and GIS coordinates. The sites and poems and can be located on Google Earth as well as by the MIT Timeline and TimeMap.

The design of Mountain Songs is unique in the way Chinese characters can be viewed and downloaded. When a poem page is opened, all users view the poems in identical attractive graphic Chinese font we have selected. Click on the 'Text Mode' box and this graphic font instantaneously coverts to text which can be downloaded and edited. The best of both worlds; handsome graphics and text combined in a seamless, 'graphic to text to graphic' software package. Poems are displayed in traditional Chinese, English translations and pinyin with tonal marks. The majority of the translations are ours. However a large number are the work of major academics, professional translators and poets, whom we designate as TransPoets. More TransPoets will be added soon.

So, put on your hiking shoes, take a trek through China's past, chat with Chinese poets, and read their poetry on site. But be careful, Chinese poetry is contagious!

Your comments and suggestions for correction or improvement are welcomed. We hope you enjoy the site and that soon you have the opportunity to chant some of these poems alone on a misty mountain top in China.
