Most everyone knows the 襄揚 Xiangyang Market on Huiahai Lu in Shanghai. It's namesake the ancient city of 襄揚 is on the south bank of the Han River in NW Hubei. Xiangyang has now been combined with the city on the north bank, 樊城 Fancheng, to make the city of 襄樊 Xiangfan. This photo is of the old city moat and wall, south of the Han River.
Home to numerous famous hermits and poets, most natably Meng Haoran 孟浩然 689-740. Also the site of a 5 year battle between the Mongols and the Southern Song. When the Mongols under Kubla Khan finally won, the Southern Song was doomed.
