South Mountain as viewed from the Han River
Returning To South Mountain At Yearend
|
Meng Haoran 689-740
No more petitions at the North Palace Gate,
I return to my simple hut on South Mountain.
Incompetent, abandoned by the emperor,
Feeling sick, few old friends.
Grey hair urges me toward old age,
Springtime discards New Year's Eve.
Constant sorrow, no way to sleep,
A pale moon
Through the pines
Shimmers
On my empty window.

Suìmù Guī Nánshān
|
Mèng Hàorán
Běiquì xiū shàngshū,
Nánshān guī bì lú.
Bùcái míngzhǔ qì,
Duōbìng gùrén shū.
Báifà cuī niánlǎo,
Qīngyáng bī suìchú.
Yǒng huái chóu bù mèi,
Sōng yuèyè chuāng xū.

Notes: In the spring of 728 Meng Haoran went to Changan and sat for the 'Jinshi' examinations but failed to pass. At the end of the year he returned despondent to his home in Xiangyang. This poem must have been written at about this time.
