On the Chu Border three rivers meet, Nine branches join at Jing Gate. The river flows to the horizon, On its surface mountains come and go. Cities float on the shores, Great waves shake the heavens. Xiangyang, what a lovely day, Keeps this mountain man drunk all day! |

Notes: The three rivers Wang Wei mentions must be the 湘江 Xiangjiang in Hunan and 漢江 Hanjiang in Hubei both of which empty into the 長江 Changjiang, near but not at 荊門 Jingmen in Jingzhou, Hubei. Actually the Xiang empties into 洞庭湖 Dongting Lake in Hunan, which empties in turn into the 長江 Changjiang. The 漢江 Hanjiang enters the Changjiang at 武漢 Wuhan. Wang Wei wrote this poem on the Han River by 襄陽 Xiangyang, Hubei. |
