Tamil state in southeast India facing the Bay of Bengal, with Madras as its present capital and cultural center. In history the hinterland around the Cauvery River basin, Trichy, Tanjur, Chidambaran has been the Tamil cultural and political center. Today the center has moved to Chennai but Tamil Hinduism and Carnatic music seem to thrive best in this riverine environment.
Tamil Nadu was home to great writer of Tamil life, R. K. Narayan. His many novels in English about the common people in the ficticious town of Malgudi are still today the best introduction to Tamil Nadu.
