On the peak of Rock Fort in Trichy is this small temple offering a 360 degree view of Trichy and the Cauvery River. Kudaivarai Koil means temple hewn from rock. It was released from the rock by the great Pallava king Mahendravarman in ther 9th century AD. The cave has sculptures of Siva, Parvati and a personification of the Cauvery River that flows by below. Script carved in the temple describes Parvati pleading with Siva not to dally with the maid Cauvery as she belongs to King Mahendravarnam. Parvati was fearful of Siva's fondness for rivers after his previous errotic encounter with the tempestuous Ganga.
