Built in the mid seventh century toward the end of the Pallava Dynasty, these shrines to Shiva stand on the shore of the Bay of Bengal. Weathered by eleven centuries of salt saturated winds and storm waves, many of the rock carvings are worn and eroded, particularly on the ocean side. This has softened and rounded their lines creating and unintended beauty. Within the two towers are Shiva linga, one facing the east and one facing west to catch the rays of the rising and setting sun. A nameless wag among the vistors to the Shore Temple was overheard, "One thing about Shiva, he sure was cock-sure of himself!"
