This ancient seaside town an hour and a half drive south of Chennai, in Tamil Nadu, is rightly famous for its 7th century Shore Temple and the numerous large shrines carved from the monster boulders that do the landscape. Xuan Zang 600-664, the Tang Dynasty monk traveler visited here. It sits on a lovely long beach and is a favorite hangout for hippies and god-seekers from the West.
