Chennai is the Madras of British Raj times and the headquaters of the British East India Company in colonial times. Today in January, 2007, it looks very much the way it did 20 years ago except for the horendous traffic of motorcycles, three wheel....... and unstopable buses. The motorcycles are particularly dangerous because they change direction precipitously and careen all over the road.
But times are changing and Chennai, the capital of Tamil Nadu, is changing also. It is the epicenter of India's medical industry, with many fine hospitals and renowned doctors. Patients come from all over the world for excellent and low cost treatment.
It is also the cultural center of Tamil culture, particularly classical carnatic music and dance. This ancient culture blossomed centuries ago along the Cauvery River basin to the southwest of Chennai, but gradually move here over the last 100 years.
