Mylapore, now a section of Chennai and the site of the Kapaleeshwarar Temple, is one of the oldest towns in Tamil Nadu. Ptolemy and later the Greeks and the Arabs of the 11th century have mentioned it in their writings. It was an important seaport. It was a Buddhist settlement and later a Jain enclave. The original Kapaleeshwarar Temple was built by the Pallavas and may have been demolished by the pleasant Portuguese who settled here in 1522. the present temple was built about 300 years ago. There is a legend that Parvathi, Siva's consort, woshipped Siva in the form of a peacock (sic.) here. Apparently it was one of Siva's down moments.
