Du Mu was born in Xian, Shaanxi of a distinguished family. He obtained hisjinshi degree in 828 and was appointed to the provinces. Unhappy with the factional strife at the time, Du Mu pursued a life of pleasure in Luoyang, Yangzhou and had a reputation as a lady's man. He is particularly remembered for his regulated verse and his quatrains.
