The ancient capital of the Chola Dynasty 850-1270 (from late Tang through Song Dynasties in China). At the height of their power the Cholas controlled most of India, Sri Lanka and they vanquished the Srivijaya kingdom on Java. It was during the Chola that Indian culture permiated South East Asia; Thailand, Cambodia, Indonesia. The music, dance, sculpture, drama and painting that survives and thrives in those countries today owes its heritage to the Cholas.
