Built by the Nayaks of Madurai in the 1550s, and later added to by the Marathas. An ugly collection of buildings. The Art Gallery today houses a great collection of Chola sculpture including dancing Natarajas. The Saraswasti Mahal Library here, established in 1700, is reported to contain over 30,000 palm leaf and paper manuscripts in Indian and European languages. Unfortunately, no time to read them!
