Nothing is known of Wang's early life. He passed the jinshi examination in 727 but never rose to a high position and he died at the outbreak of the An Lushan rebellion.

During his lifetime his poetry was much admired and his reputation outshown those of Du Fu and Li Bo. The Japanese monk Kukai who was in China at this time wrote that Wang's treatise on poetry was much consulted.
