Good-bye to the People of Hangzhou
Bai Juyi 772-846

Elders and officers line the returning road;
Flagons of wine load the parting table.
I have not ruled you with the wisdom of Shao Kong;
What is the reason your tears shold fall so fast?
My taxes were heavy, though many ofthe people were poor;
The farmers were hungry, for often their fields were dry.
All I did was to dam the water of the Lake
And help a little in a year when things were bad.

Bié Zhōumín
Bái Jūyì 772-846

Qílǎo zhē guī lù,
Hū jiāng mǎn bié yàn.
Gān táng wú yī shù,
Nǎ dé lèi shànrán.
Shuì zhòng duō pín hù,
Nóng jī zú hàn tián.
Wéi liú yī hú shuǐ,
Yǔ rǔ jiù xiōngnián.
