There Goes Spring Again!
        Basho 1644-1694
There goes spring again!
Birds cry
Tears cloud the eyes of fish

Iku Haru Ya
Basho 1644-1694

Yuku haru ya tori naki
uo no me wa namida

Translator: Dongbo 東波

Notes:
In the spring of 1689, with the cherry blossoms in full bloom, Basho set out on his trip to Tohoku, northern Japan, crossed the 白川 Shirakawa (River) and commenced his now immortal travel essay, おくのほそ道, Oku No Hoso Michi, Narrow Road to the North. As the cherry blossoms floated in the spring air he wrote this parting haiku.

Photo is of the 弁財天寺 Bentaiten Temple in the middle of Shinobazu Ike in Ueno Park as seen through the cherry blossoms on March 31, 2007.
