Early morning view of Xihu
Spring Outing On Qiantang Lake
|
Bai Juyi 772-846
Gushan Temple to the north
Jia Pavillion to the west,
Lake surface smooth
clouds droop low.
Everywhere
early orioles
warble in warm trees,
At someone's home
first swallows
peck at spring mud.
Ravishing flowers
want to charm
my eyes,
Mostly I love
the east side of the lake
can't come too often.
In the shade of green poplars
rests white sand embankment.

Notes: Qiantang Lake is the famous Xihu, West Lake in Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province. Bai Juyi served as govenor here and was responsible for building the Baidi, the dyke that carries his name. The Baidi connects the island of Gushan, Lone Mountain, to the mainland. Over the centuries there were a number of temples on Gushan. Today none remain.
