Morning sunrise over the Lijiang in Yangshuo. One must look east to avoid seeing the hordes of tourists!
Yangshuo town is a strange place today in July, 2006, an oil and water mix of Western backpackers and Chinese tour groups. The present town was built and designed to cater to western backpackers, but the majority of the tourists today are Chinese tour groups. The result is that the streets are cramed with tourists, but the coffee shops, western restaurants and bars are largely empty. Tour groups don't eat out and they are mostly here to look. In this summer heat there are not so many western backpackers and they appear rather forlorn eating alone or in small groups. In effect, everyone looks out of place.
