It is said that more than 1600 years ago, Huili, an Indian monk, came to Hangzhou, saw the exotic and graceful peaks and decided to build his temple here, naming it the Lingyinsi, Spirit's Retreat Temple.

Near the Heavenly King's Hall of the Lingyin Temple, is the Lengquan Pavilion, Cold Spring Pavillion. When Su Shi was prefect in Hangzhou, he enjoyed a cup or two of wine here with his friend the abbot Biancai, while they exchanged poems.
