Kamakura's famous Shinto shrine on Friday, May 11, is swarming with young school children and adults. The nearby Zen temples, in contrast, seem to attract mainly a scattering of older people. As a matter of fact, except for the Hachimangu and the Daibutsu, Kamakura seems lika an old prople's rest home. Japan's aging population... Surely the school children are led here to instill in them Patriotism. Education in Japan, like in China, is govenment controlled. The Hachimangu was constructed by Minamoto Yoriyoshi 995-1082, of the same clan as Minamoto Yoritomo the Shogun of Kamakura. Like all Shinto shrines it keeps non Yamato people at arm's length.
