The base of Minamoto Yoritomo's military battle with his arch enemies the Taira in the 12th century. after defeating the Taira he was proclaimed Shogun and ruled Japan from Kamakura, with a figurehead emperoro in Kyoto. Thus started the Kamakura period that lasted from 1185 to 1333. Since Yoritomo had no heirs power was transfered to the Hojo the family of Yoritomo's wife. The Hojo ruled until they were weakened by the costs of protecting Japan from the Yuan Dyansty invasions of Kublai Khan, at which time power returned to Kyoto.
