Zaisheng was the daughter of Yao Ximen (1597-1636), who served as Minister of Culture in the late Ming. Like 神一 Shenyi, she married into the Hou family of Ming loyalists; her husband, Hou Yan, died a martyr at the hands of Ming troops. After his death, she became a nun and joined Shenyi, whom she apparently took as her spiritual teacher, in her hermitage.
