At present we know little about Yi Yuchen excepth that he was from the village of Kumemura on Okinawa, a citizen of the Ryukyuan Kingdom, but probably his ancestors came from Fujian Province as a 'gift' to the Ryukyuan Kingdom by the Ming emperor Taizu. This poem was written while Yi Yuchen was visiting China, no doubt on a tributary mission to the Ming court.
