Renowned as the first emperor of the brilliant Tang Dynasty. As a soldier in the army he conspired against the Sui Dynasty and in 618 placed his father on the throne as the first (figurehead) emperor of the Tang. He then ruthlessly crushed all rivals. His jealous elder bother, in league with a younger brother, conspired to assasinate him but the plot failed. He then obtained legal sanction to arrest the two on charges of debauching the palace ladies, but instead he murdered them both and took his younger brother's widow as his wife!

His subsequent reign was of unrivaled brilliance and glory.
