Born in Bohai, Cangzhou, Hebei, little is known about Gao Shi's early life. He failed the jinshi examination twice and settle down to farming in south eastern Henan. In 744 he met Li Bo and Du Fu in Kaifeng and became a lifelong friend of Du Fu.
At the time fo the An Lushan rebellion he caught the eye of Govenor General Han Koshu and aided him during the battle at the Tongguan (Tong Pass). Later he was exiled to Sichuan due to the emnity of a court minister. There he met Du Fu again and they renewed their friendship.
Gao Shi's poetry is full of heroic military themes.
