Sunset scene from next to Yueyanglou, Dongting Lake
Overnight At Xiangyin

Qi Ji 864-937
Storm roils Dongting Lake,
Windblown sampans skate glitering surface.
Somewhere a startled swan takes flight,
My lone boat sails with the moon.
Hard times, everywhere battles rage,
Vast fields cut off from spring plows.
My family
who knows if they are still alive,
By the wooded park
of my home town?

Notes: Today Xiangxin is a town just up river from Yueyang in Hunan Province. on the north edge of Dongting Lake. Perhaps in Tang times it was synonomous to Yueyang.
