Looking Out At South Mountain
Yuan Hongdao 1568-1610

(Full Title) Together With Zhu Feier, Wang Yixu,
and Duan Huizhi I Stopped At Xingjiao temple
And Looked Out At The View Of Sounth Mountain

The place is ancient..
        no histories say how old;
the terrace, crumbling...
        don't ask when it was built.
Fragrant winds
        blow across Wei Family Ridge;
brilliant snow light
        sparkles in Fan Stream.
The country temple, half-hidden
        by red maple leaves;
people's houses, interspersed
        with clumps of blue-green lotus.
Across the stream, the mountains
        are still more beautiful...
we mount our horses
        gallop inot the gray mist.
