Mawei Slope
        Yuan Mei 1716-1798

Don't sing 'Song of Eternal Regret' this year,
Today conscription also sunders marriages.
In Shihao Village when couples are parted,
They cry even more than those two at Longlife Hall!

Mǎwēipò;马巍坡;
Yuán Méi 1716-1798

Mò chàng dāngnián Chánghèn Gē,
Rénjiān yì zìyǒu Yínhé.
Shíháo Cūnli fūqī bié,
Lèi bǐ Chángshēng Diàn shàng duō.

Notes:
Maweipo, Lofty Horse Slope, is the small town west of Changan (Xian) where the emperor Xuan Zong's consort Yang Guifei was torn from him and strangled as they were fleeing the An Lushan rebellion in 755.
