In July, 2002, Wuwei was just constructing this monumnt of the Han Dynasty flying horse that was discovered here and which is now the symbol of Chinese tourism
The famous Buddhist translator, 鳩摩羅什 Jiūmáluóshí, Kumarajiva, 343-413 lived here for 15 years before finally going to Changan.
Li Zequ of Opium War fame was transferred to Gansu by the emperor who feared the Europeans would assasinate him. He lived in Wuwei at the Wenmiao and later at Jiayuguan.
