The great monk 玄奘 Xuán Zàng 600-664, whose 16 year courageous pilgrimage to India between 629 to 645, became a hero on his return to China and a confidant of Emperor Tai Zong 629-649. After Tai Zong's death Xuan Xong petitioned the new emperor, Gao Zong, to build a pagoda to store the many scriptures 玄奘 Xuan Zong had brought back from India. It was named the 大雁塔 Dayanta, Big Wild Goose Pagoda, and still stands in Xian today, 1350 years later.
