Kanzeonji was completed in 746 and used to be the most important temple on Kyushu. Its large bell is one of Japan's oldest, dating from 697. Next to Kanzeonji stands Kaidanin, a subtemple which served as one of only three ordination halls in all of Japan. A treasure hall can be found on the temple grounds.

Saicho and Kukai and Ennin visited here on their way to and from China.
