The Chusonji was established in 850 by Ennin, who established many of Tohoku's other old temples. In 1126 Lord Fujiwara Kiyohira enlarged the temple complex, creating a Buddhist heaven on earth, by adding over 40 structures.

It was largely destroyed by Minamoto Yoritomo in 1189, but several extraordinary structures survived.
