Formerly the residence of Wu Ji, a prince of the Wei kingdom, the first temple was built here in 555. It was rebuilt in 701 by the monk Huiyun and named Jianguosi. In 712 it was renamed Xiangguosi by the Tang emperor Li Dan. It is one of the finest old temples in China.
