Built by 慧持 Hui Chi, the bother of 慧遠 Hui Yuan, in 387 of the Eastern Jin Dynasty. Later Hui Yuan planted an orchard around the temple. The Tianchisi is famous for the two spring fed pools before the temple. According to one legend 文殊菩薩 Wenshu Bodhisattva rode his lion from Wutaishan and stuck two of his fingers in the rock creating the two pools.
