Hanke, 1610-1659, lived during the turbulent time of dynastic change between the Ming and Qing. When his father died he became a monk. In 1645 when the Qing troops sacked Nanjing he composed a record of the atrocities committed on the Nanjing patriots. As he tried to escape he was apprehended at the city gate with this incriminating document on him. For this he was exiled to Shenyang 沈陽 in 1648.
