The Moon
        Hanke 1610-1659

A bright moon brought me here,
Along the way
        it shone
                on autumn grasses.
Now here
        the new moon
                exposes desolation,
Now here
        the new moon
                finds me old and feeble.

Yuè
Shì Hánkě 1610-1659

Wǒ tóng míngyuè lái,
Yīlù zhào qiūcǎo.
Yuè dào shuò tíng huāng,
Rén dào shuò tīng lǎo.

Translator: Dongbo 東波

Notes:
Before the Nanjing Massacre of 1937, Nanjing had been pillaged and raped many times before. This poem was written just after the Manchus decimated Nanjing in their march south to form the Qing Dynasty in the mid 1600's.
