Ni Zan was from a wealthy merchant family in Wuxi, Jiangsu. Having no interest in the family business he sold it off and dumped the cash into collecting paintings and calligraphy. He styled himself Lan Zan or Lazy Zan. But he was anything but lazy when it came to painting; he was one of the foremost painters of the Yuan Dynasty and also a poet of note.
