Exiles were the main carriers of poetry into the wilds south and west of the various dynastic borders. Liu Zhongyuan, Tang Dynasty official and poet, was exiled twice, first to Yongzhou in Hunan from 805-815 and soon thereafter to Liuzhou in Guangxi where he died in 819. While in exile Liu wrote many poems that have survived until today.
