Notes:

Bodhidharma, Damo 達摩 ?-536, the Indian monk who
originated Chan Buddhism, traveled to China from India
by way of the sea route from India. He arrived in the
Guangzhou area in the early 6th century and visited the
光孝寺 Guangxiaosi, Bright Filial Piety Temple, before
proceeding northward to spread Chan Buddhism in China.
