Improvised On Swallow Cliff
        Shi Kefa 1601-1645

I've come home
        but can't meet my mother,
So close
        yet like a thousand miles!
At the precipice
        clear wine and tears,
Drip down
        seep to the river bottom.

Yènzijī Kǒuzhàn
Shǐ Kěfǎ 1601-1645

Lái jiā bù miàn mǔ,
Zhǐchǐ yóu qiānlǐ.
Jītóu jiǔ qīnglèi,
Dīdī chén jiāng dǐ.

Notes:
Shi Kefa wrote this poem in 1645 on Swallow Cliff just to the north of Nanjing. His mother was living in Nanjing and he wanted to visit and he wanted to vist her one more time. His orders to defend Nanjing against the oncoming Manchu forces were changed because Yangzhou was in danger of falling. He marched to Yangzhou to defend it, but was killed as Yangzhou fell to the Manchu forces..
