Encountering Rain at Zhangba Reservoir One Evening, I
Encountering Rain at Zhangba Reservoir One Evening
While Enjoying a Cool Breeze with Rich Young Men
and Their Singing Girls, I

Du Fu 712-770

Sunset is just right for boating
A light breeze stirs a few waves
Boaters pause by the dense bamboo
And breathe in the cool lotus-flower air
The young men add ice to their drinks
The women scape lotus roots clean
A cloud overhead turns dark
Surely the rain will bring poems

Notes:
From the book Poems of the Masters, China's Classic Anthology of Tang and Song Dynasty verse. One of the best, if not "the best", books of general translations of Chinese poetry. Wonderfully detailed notes on each poem and all poems are displayed in the original Chinese.

Translated by Red Pine, published by Copper Canyon Press.
