Thinking of My Home in Chang'an
While Traveling with the Army for Nine Days

Cen Shen 715-770

If only I could climb somewhere
But no one sends me wine
My poor distant garden of mums
Blooms by a battlefield now

Xíngjūn Jiǔ Rì Sī Cháng'ān Gù Yuán
Cén Shēn 715-770

Qiáng yù dēng gāo qù,
Wú rén sòng jiǔ lái.
Yáo lián gù yuán jú,
Yīng bàng zhànchǎng kāi.

Translator: Red Pine-Bill Porter 赤松

Notes:
From the book Poems of the Masters, China's Classic Anthology of Tang and Song Dynasty verse. One of the best, if not "the best", books of general translations of Chinese poetry. Wonderfully detailed notes on each poem and all poems are displayed in the original Chinese.

Translated by Red Pine, published by Copper Canyon Press.
