Nanning as it looks in July, 2006
Halting At Nanning Citadel

Le Quy Don 1726-?
The dawn’s early light
reflects on the pennants and banners,
Everywhere about this river
and these mountains
is peaceful and quiet.
The majestic official offices
the ridge in full bloom,
The watchtower standing tall
looking down on a snow-white shoal.
In this land that borders a vassal domain
sentiments run deep,
When people meet this envoy
their eyes are clear.
Days spent racing about
respectful all the while,
For the Classic of Poetry
and the rules of propriety
should be learned
according to Li’s example.

Rén géng shǐ kè yǎn chángqīng.
