New Year 1933

Lu Xun 1881-1936 The General crouches on cloud wreathed crags,  While crashing thunderbolts          crush villigers in their cold huts. Much better to mark time in the Foreign Settlement, Where the clack of majong tiles         proclaim a new spring

Èrshǐèrnián Yuándàn

Lǔ Xùn 1881-1936 Yún duì gāojiǎ hù jiāngjun, Tíngshēng háncūn miè xiàmín. Dàodǐ bùrú zūjìe hǎo, Dǎpái shēng guǒ yòu xīnchūn.

Notes: This poem is found in Lu Xun's diary for January 26, 1933, Chinese New Year. It was scribbled for his friend Uchiyamasan, the Shanghai book dealer, then written again for Tai jingnong. Perhaps it was written as a black joke. The General was Chiang Kaishek who was enjoying New Year in his villa on Lushan, a mountain often shrouded in mist, while one of his anti-Communist campaigns was in progress.
