The Shen Garden

Lu You (1125-1210) I The sun is sinking behind the city wall to the sad notes of a shining bugle. In the Shen Garden, the pond and the pavilion appear no longer to be the same, except the heart-breaking spring ripples still so green under the bridge, the ripples that reflected her arrival light-footed, in such beauty as would shame wild goose into fleeing. II It's forty years since we last met, the dream broken, the scent vanished, in the Shen Garden, the aged willows produce no more catkins. I'm old, already turning into the dust of Mount Ji, when I shed a drop of tear at this old scene.

ShěnYuán èr Shǒu

Lù Yóu 1125-1210 Qí Yī Chénɡshànɡ xiéyánɡ huà jiǎo āi, Shěnyuán fēi fù jiù chí tái. Shānɡ xīn qiáoxià chūnbō lǜ, Cénɡ shì jīnɡhónɡ zhào yǐnɡ lái. Qí Er Mènɡ duàn xiānɡ xiāo sìshí nián, Shěnyuán rén lǎo bù chuī mián. Cǐ shēn xínɡ zuò jīshān tǔ, Yóu diào yí zōnɡ yī xuàn rán.

Notes: Shen Garden is situated on the western side of Yanghe Alley, Middle Lu Xun Road, Shaoxing City. It is a famous Southern Song Dynasty garden, well known for the story of the tragic marriage of Lu You, a patriotic poet in the Southern Song Dynasty,His poem, Chaitoufeng, Hairpin of Gold Phoenix, is inscribed on the wall. It was here that Lu You met his young love before his mother forced him to marry another. Lu You came back to Shen Garden and composed poems several times to express his feelings for his lost love. 其一 [大意]夕陽斜照的城頭上，畫角傳出陣陣哀傷的聲音。眼前這沈園，池沼亭臺早已不是舊日的模樣。更令人觸目傷心的是橋底下清澈透綠的春水，曾經映照過她驚鴻一般的身影來。 其二 [大意] 四十年來夢已做盡，香也消散，沈園的柳樹老得連飛絮也飄不起來。我行將就木的身子即將變作會稽山下的一壞泥土，可是一看到這些舊痕跡，還是傷心得涕淚縱橫。
