A Cocky Brush

Su Dongpo 1037-1101 White hair flourishing          in frosty breeze, On a rattan cot          In a small hut                         I rest my frail frame. Seeing this gentleman's          spring nap is deep The Daoist monk          gently strikes                  the 5th watch bell.

Zòng Bǐ

Sū Dōngpō 1037-1101 Báitóu xiāosàn mǎn shuāng fēng, Xiǎo gé cáng chuáng jì bìng róng. Bàodào xiānsheng chūn shuì měi, Dàoren qīng dǎ wǔgēng zhōng.

Dongbo 東波

Notes: 王註: 按此詩, 執政聞而怒之, 再貶儋耳. (合註) 曾季 This poem was written in 1096 when Dongpo was in exile in Huizhou, Guangdong. It is said that when it reached the capital of Kaifeng it was chanted before Zhang Dun, Dongpo's arch enemy. Zhang was furious to think Su was enjoying his exile in Huizhou and banished him further south to Danzhou on Hainan.
