Moth Eyebrow Mountain Snow
        Su Shi 1006-1101

West of Emeishan a thousand li of snow,
Looking north Chengdu as if in a well.
Everyday spring wind relentlessly blows ,
Fifth month travelers freeze like grubs.

Chūnfēng rìrì chuī bù xiāo,
Wǔyuè xíngrén dòng rú chóng.

Notes:
"The language of translation, in Lawrence Venuti's terms, either 'domesticates' the language of the original or allows itself to be 'foreignized' by it, its resources challenged and extended at the level of grammar and syntax."

From Zhaoming Qian's introduction to Ezra Pound and China, U of Michigan Press
