Flat Lake
        Hanshan Deqing 1564-1623

Flat Lake cold penetrates water-lily clothes
the mountain by the lake is neither right or wrong
dusty tracks all end the world is far away
white clouds and gulls have no hidden plans

Píng Hú
Hānshān Déqīng 1564-1623

Píng hú lěng jìn jì héyī,
Hú shàng qīng shān jué shì fēi.
Chén jì jìn xiāo rénshì yuǎn,
Báiyún ōuniǎo zǒng wàngjī.

Translator: Red Pine-Bill Porter 赤松

Notes:
Flat Lake is thought to be Poyang Hu, the lake just to the east of Lushan, which was clearly visible to Hanshan Deqing from his hermitage on the southeast corner of Lushan.

This translation from the anthology of Chinese monk poets, The Clouds Should Know Me By Know, edited by Red Pine and Mike O'Connor, published by Wisdom Press.
