Mountain Pass Farewell
        Wang Wei 701-761

Here on this mountain we part...
        nevermind,
At day's end the brushwood gate...
        is closed.
Spring grass will be green again...
        next year,
But, will you return then......
        or not?

Rì mù yǎn cháifēi.
Chūn cǎo míngnián lǜ,
Wángsūn guī bù guī.

Notes:
We are guessing that the mountains referred to in this poem are
the Zhongnanshan, 中南山, south of Xian, where Wang Wei had his
country retreat by the Wang River.
